Carbon Fiber Tube Size Guide: How to Measure OD, ID, and Wall Thickness

I've lost count of how many customers have written to us with the same sentence: "I need a carbon fiber tube, but I'm not sure what size to order." It happens every single week, and honestly, it's completely understandable — if you are new to carbon fiber, the numbers on the spec sheet (OD, ID, wall thickness) can look like alphabet soup.

Here is the good news: measuring a carbon fiber tube correctly takes about two minutes with a cheap digital caliper. And once you know what the three numbers mean, you will never guess again. Sound familiar? Let me walk you through it the way we explain it to our own customers.

The Three Numbers That Matter

Every tube has three dimensions that matter:

  • Outer Diameter (OD) — the outside width of the tube. This is the number that appears first in most product names, like our 3K roll wrapped tubes which list OD in the title.
  • Inner Diameter (ID) — the inside width. This determines what can pass through or fit inside the tube — wires, shafts, or a bearing that needs to seat into the bore.
  • Wall Thickness (WT) — the difference between OD and ID divided by two. This is the main driver of strength and stiffness.

Wall thickness is easy to calculate: (OD − ID) ÷ 2 = wall thickness. For example, a tube with a 10mm OD and 8mm ID has a 1mm wall. If you only know the OD and the wall thickness, you can work out the ID the same way in reverse.

How to Measure Properly

A digital caliper is the right tool. Measuring tapes and rulers are fine for the length, but not for diameters — a 0.5mm error there is enough to ruin a fit.

  1. Measure the OD at the tube end, then again 90 degrees around. Tubes are usually round, but a quick double check catches out-of-round tubes.
  2. Measure the ID the same way, with the caliper jaws inside the bore. Watch out for sharp edges — carbon fiber dust and splinters are no fun.
  3. Check the wall thickness with the caliper directly on the tube end if possible. It's the most reliable way and confirms your OD minus ID math.

One tip from the factory floor: measure a used part before ordering a replacement. Old metal or plastic parts can be slightly off from their nominal size, so the actual measurement beats the spec sheet every time.

How to Choose the Right Size for Your Project

The right size depends on what the tube has to do:

  • Drone arms and light RC frames — 5-10mm OD with a 1mm wall is the sweet spot for most small builds. Our 5-10mm roll wrapped tubes are a common choice here.
  • RC aircraft spars and medium frames — 11-20mm OD gives a big jump in stiffness without much weight. These are our most popular tubes for fixed-wing builds.
  • Robotics and heavier structures — 21-30mm OD or larger, usually with a 1.5-2mm wall for structural rigidity. See the 21-30mm range.
  • Industrial and marine applications — 32mm and up. Larger diameters resist bending far better than thick walls on small tubes, which is why big masts and spars are wide rather than just heavy.

If a bearing or bushing has to fit into the bore, match the ID to the bearing's outer diameter. If the tube slides over a shaft, match the ID to the shaft, or order one step up if you want a slip fit.

Common Sizing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

The biggest mistake I see is mixing up OD and ID when ordering. It sounds obvious, but when you're staring at a spec sheet at 11pm, it happens. Trust me — I have seen it more times than I can count. Write down OD, ID, and length — in that order — and check them twice.

The second mistake is ignoring tolerance. Ever had a part that just would not slide into place? A tube that is supposed to be 10mm OD can be 10.05 or 9.95mm, and for a press-fit that matters. Our standard tolerance is ±0.1mm on OD for roll-wrapped tubes and ±0.05mm for pultruded products. If you need a tight fit, mention it in your order — we can select for tolerance.

And the third one: forgetting the length. We can cut to any length you need at no extra cost, so there's no reason to buy a 1000mm tube when you need 320mm. Just leave a note in the custom order form.
